I'm nearly 16 and I'm just coming towards the end of my GCSE year. I'm very different from other people my age, I think I know what to do with my life (kind of vaguely) and I really genuinely care about the world around me whereas most of my friend's lives revolve around Glee and 1 Direction! I want to DO something with my life and I've just started applying to sixth form college to study Philosophy, Medieval History, English Lit. and possibly Art as an AS level, and i've also applied also to United World Colleges. For more info on UWC, look here: http://www.uwc.org/who_we_are/default.aspx I'm pretty certain I want to study either philosophy or History at an Oxbridge college, or maybe Bristol or Bath but I don't know what to do after that career wise! But then I thought, if i want to make a positive change in the world, why not look into United Nations careers? I have looked at their website but their job descriptions are a bit vague and my parents don't have any advice on the matter. I plan on asking my career's advisor about it next week, but in the meantime, can you help me? I mean, what sort of jobs are there available other than translating or interpreting, which I'm not very interested in because languages aren't my strongest subject. Does the UN accept people with just one language? or would I have to study harder in my french classes? How much do UN workers generally get paid? Are there any jobs available in the UK? I'm not opposed to living abroad. I have quite a broad extra curricular interest. I volunteer for the Riding for the Disabled Association, I'm a peer mentor, a prefect and head of a year 8 house group. I'm also a member of a creative writing group and i've interviewed the Radio 4 comedian John Finnemore and i've been asked to interview Patrick Ness for an educational resource. I have the skills required (I think!) and I'm very able to cope with work loads...so yeah, please could you answer my specific questions and provide me with some detail about the UN? Please no mean comments! Thank You :) P.S. a note about A levels, would a better combination be Biology, Art, English Lit. and Medieval History? where Biology replaces philosophy. Thank you again!! x... Read More »
